In-Situ Thermal Desorption of Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soil, Tournai, Belgium

A 46-tube ISTD system treated soil contaminated by a former fuel tank leak at a 3 Suisses site, reducing hydrocarbon concentrations from 7,500 mg/kg to below the 500 mg/kg target.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

  380 m³ of contaminated soil (690 T)

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Treatment (ISTD)

       Main contaminant

TPH (hydrocarbons)

        Site challenges

Contamination from an old, unused fuel tank leak, at 4.5 m depth over approximately 85 m²

        Project Timeline

2013

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

Coaxial heating tubes with a protective concrete layer over the tube heads

          Treatment program

46 heating tubes, 23 methane-fuelled burners

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Desorbed vapors circulated and evaporated via burner-driven hot air (reburn)

       Process control

32 thermocouples · continuous emission monitoring (CO, CxHy, CO2, O2, NOx), remote-accessible data logging

RESULTS

✅         80,000 m³ of contaminated soil treated.

✅          Hydrocarbon concentration reduced from 7,500 mg/kg to below the 500 mg/kg target

✅         Project delivered for 3 Suisses with consultant Sertius after 57 days of heating
