In-Situ Thermopile Treatment of TPH-Contaminated Soil Beneath the DELTA Transport Site in Brussels, Belgium

Around 3,000 m³ of soil contaminated by leaking underground fuel tanks was treated in situ after further excavation became impossible due to building stability constraints, reducing mineral oil concentrations from up to 37,000 mg/kg and achieving the remediation objectives.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

   3,000 m³ of contaminated soil (5,400 T)

          Thermal technology

In-situ thermal treatment using the Thermopile process

       Main contaminant

TPH / mineral oil, up to 37,000 mg/kg

        Site challenges

Contamination beneath an underground station, metro depot and bus depot; further excavation prohibited due to building stability constraints

        Project Timeline

2005

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-situ thermal treatment selected to remediate contaminated soil that could no longer be excavated due to structural stability constraints

          Treatment program

Treatment performed in situ following removal of the leaking tanks and excavation to a maximum depth of 6 m

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Desorbed gases collected and routed through a gas-treatment system before release

       Process control

Thermal treatment and off-gas treatment integrated in the on-site Thermopile system

RESULTS

✅           3,000 m³ (5,400 T) of TPH-contaminated soil treated in situ.

✅           Decontamination objective successfully achieved despite major structural constraints.

✅           Mineral oil concentrations reduced from up to 37,000 mg/kg to the required clean-up level.
