Baina – Spain
Context
Thermal desorption of 8,000 tons of tar contaminated soil by means of mobile thermal desorption. The clean-up site was formerly used by the ‘Fábrica Química de Mieres’ as a tar distillation plant, and will be used after decontamination by Thyssen as new industrial site. The clean-up was funded by the SEPES (Spanish Governmental agency in charge of industrial redevelopment of contaminated sites). The soil was already excavated and sieved by a previous unsuccessful contractor. Deep Green has contracted the thermal desorption part of the contract for the PAH contaminated soil.
Equipment
The project started with a DRAGON 15 unit. Stack tests were successfully performed on the unit. The unit was equipped with continuous emissions monitoring.
Treatment Target
The soil to treat was highly energetic (>2000 KJ/kg), due to the high tar content. PAH content was moderate (16 EPA) at an average of 2,000 ppm. The loss on ignition of the soil was 20 to 30%! Clean-up levels were set at 200 ppm total PAH and 50 ppm mineral oil. All clean-up standards for clean soil were met.
This project was designed and executed by the current Haemers Technologies team, when they worked within the legal entity TPS Technologies Inc, which belongs to the Haemers Technologies group.
