“THERMAL DESORPTION WITH SMART BURNERS – CASE STUDY FOR THE IN-SITU TREATMENT OF UNSATURATED SOILS AT THE REFINERY OF GELA (ITALY)”
(original title : DESORBIMENTO TERMICO CON SMART BURNERS – CASO DI STUDIO PER IL TRATTAMENTO INSITU DEI TERRENI INSATURI ALL’INTERNO DELLA RAFFINERIA DI GELA (ITALIA)”)
Authors: Jan Haemers, Andro Barabesi, Gianfranco Caccamo, Katia Pacella
Description
This abstract describes the remediation system through ISTD technology (In-Situ Thermal Desorption) located inside the Refinery of Gela (ENI Group), site consisting of an ex-discharge of oil residues deposited in the past. The executive planning and the interventions are in the process of execution by the Temporary Group Simam S.p.A. – Icaro Ecology S.p.A – Haemers Technologies SA.
The site contamination regards light and heavy hydrocarbons, benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compounds, chlorinated compounds (chloromethane, vinyl chloride, 1,2 dichloroethane) and mercury. The area has been subdivided into 24 batches: Zone A (12 lots of average surface equal to ≈ 290 m²) and Zone B (12 lots with an area of between 228 m² and 400 m²).
The abstract details the first batch A1 that is considered as pilot with a treatment period, which began on September 20th, 2017 and ended on 13th of December, 2017.
Thanks to the goal achieved from the first batch we will discuss our treatment in terms of results obtained, monitoring plan and strategy adopted as well as all the lessons learned that will provide a strong support for the remediation of the next batches.
