NEW SITE ALERT: Thermal Desorption for contaminated sludge in Poland

admin2022-02-25T12:17:37+02:00

We are pleased to announce that we are starting a new ESTD site in Kalina, Poland. The site contains contaminated sludge that will be treated by thermal desorption using our technology: The Smart Burners. We are remediating dried sludge mainly polluted with Phenol, BTEX and HAP. Contaminated dried sludge ESTD treatment in Poland The project counts one pilot and two piles, each representing approximately 50 days of treatment. And what a delight for us to oversee the first thermopile in Poland that...

Former Steel and Coking Factory Reconversion for 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China

admin2019-06-28T12:26:07+02:00

Former large industrial sites are often subject to closure or relocation, especially when situated in urban areas. It was the case of a major former steel and coking factory, covering an area of 8.63 km², located in the west of Beijing (China), for which the industrial activity was stopped in 2006.  These types of sites present a big issue in terms of ground pollution, due to the industrial activity, and therefore space reconversion. In this case, the former industrial site...

The site interested by the remediation process through the application of the In-Situ Thermal Desorption technology, located inside the Refinery of Gela (ENI Group), consists of former discharge for oil residues deposited in the past. The contaminants are light and heavy hydrocarbons, benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated compounds and mercury. The treatment area...

In Situ Thermal Desorption under a building, in the center of Brussels

admin2019-08-19T17:49:23+02:00

Nowadays, urban soil is a natural ressource to preserve. Indeed, the fast urbanization of the recent years led to considerable consequences in terms of space and energy consumption as well as water and soil pollution. At the present time, urban areas contain many contaminated sites. Two main issues can be identified which would need to be addressed through further reflection: first, the space consumption. Polluted areas in the centre of the cities are a waste of space. The clean-up of these...

Laboratory tests and pilot conception at Biên Hòa Airbase, Vietnam

admin2019-06-18T09:36:23+02:00

During the US-Vietnam War, millions of litres of herbicides were dropped over Vietnam: The Rainbow agents.  Biên Hòa Airbase was a joint operating base for the South Vietnam Air Force and the United States Air Force where thousands of barrels of Agent Orange were stored. Agent Orange was proven to cause severe health issues, including birth defects, neurological problems and cancers. Agent Orange is a mixture of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic. Traces of dioxins were also found in some Agents. Indeed,...

Thermal Desorption of Highly-impacted mercury soils in an Urban Area

admin2019-01-22T17:52:34+02:00

By Q. Hilbert, A. Vandekerckhove, H. SAADAOUI, J. HAEMERS - HAEMERS Technologies J. Chibleur, J. Leplat - Biogénie
In-Situ and Ex-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD and ESTD) are a technology based on thermal conduction that can effectively treat organic contaminants, independently of large soil heterogeneity. One of its applications is for contaminated properties in urban areas and under existing buildings. The main principle of the technology resides in installing a network of steel pipes that act as a...

Discover our latest site in Beijing!

admin2018-08-10T11:25:40+02:00

We just reached a new record!

Today is a big day for Haemers, as this Beijing site is officialy the biggest in operation, with 355 Smart Burners in action! And it's only a start as no more than 350 burners will join the party in August 2018. So that will make a total of 705 Smart Burners for only one site! Even if this number makes our head a bit dizzy, we are more than aware that this site is a...

Gela V.T.U. in Eni Refinery with Lunar Eclipse (blood moon) / July 2018

Quick overview of our current ISTD Site on Eni Refinery in Gela (Sicily)

admin2018-08-20T16:17:31+02:00

Have a glimpse of our In Situ Thermal Remediation project in Eni's Refinery in Gela (Sicily, Italy), in operation 24/7.

Can you guess what is shown on this picture?

It's actually a "V.T.U." as we call it, which actually means "Vapour Treatment Unit". What is its purpose? It's quiet simple! As the soil heats, the contaminants vaporize and are extracted then sent through a pipe network to the V.T.U. where they'll be treated. The treatment is done by a chemical reaction that...
